Skateboarding in New York City has always brought together an amazing union of creative spirits who have learnt to hone their craft from a relentlessly DIY ethos.
Skating demands that your spirit toughen in advance of your body, and that grit will eventually lead to grace. Grace under pressure, being steady, and steadfast is a characteristic this community values above all. This is a shared value in documentary and street photography.
In 2012 Justin Hogan, Brian Kelley & Dan Zvereff, brought together their love for photography, art, culture, and life after connecting through skateboarding. Steady Zine followed, an oversized bimonthly photo publication that celebrated their shared muse of the moment.
Each issue had a curatorial theme, celebrating street, documentary and self-generated photographic projects.
The founding photographers all shoot film with 35mm vintage rangefinder cameras. That technology was the inspiration for the identity and prism image in the logo crest.
Even the grain and saturation of the images produced by the technology they embraced said something about their process being informed by a shared gestalt. It celebrates the observant and unflinching, stark and yet human, truthful, unvarnished.
